Chinese Kickboxing (San Shou)

Our style of kickboxing is known as San Shou and combines western boxing with the throwing and kicking techniques of traditional Kung Fu.

The main differences between traditional martial arts and kickboxing are that traditional martial artists do not get hit with heavy impact often enough to be conditioned to handle it. In traditional tournaments a person might only receive a few controlled blows in a three minute round, whereas in kickboxing, the contestant is getting hit constantly during the rounds and will therefore become conditioned to it.

Our classes are based on the same structure as a boxing gym, which includes a warm up, conditioning circuit, basics, more advanced techniques and combinations and various degrees of sparring from no contact (shadow sparring) to full contact.

We teach our students to be respectful of each other and make sure they know that you get back whatever you dish out. Any student found using inappropriate force or not being respectful to their fellow fighters will be expelled from the association as people learn kickboxing to better themselves, not to be beaten up by bullies. All students help each other to become a team and respectful to other fighters/people within the association.

While traditionally there is no belt structure for San Shou, here in the Western world people recognise competence in a martial art by belt colour. We have therefore introduced a grading system to San Shou with nine belts obtainable between yellow and black.

What do I do next?

First, just come along and join in. Getting fit enough to fight takes time, so we start you on a fitness program. We then teach you how to stretch safely, start you on some boxing basics, defence, foot work, punching techniques, kicking techniques and eventually throws and take downs. After a while, when your basics are adequate, we let you have a go at sparring if you want! And you never know- you may even want to have a go at a little competition. The classes are a great way to get fit, have fun in a completely safe environment and discover talents you never thought you had!

Please remember - Rome wasn't built in a day!

Mandatory Equipment to take part in the class

You will, without exception, need the following kit after your 3 rd or 4 th class:

After four lessons we will need you to become a member. This is for your health and safety, as we will need to insure you. Membership with the association also includes a club T-shirt, trousers, membership book, quarterly newsletter and the ability to compete and grade. Initially, all kit is supplied for you. Once you have your membership, you need to buy basic kit. This includes:

  • Hand Wraps
  • Gum shield
  • Skipping rope

Once you have decided you want to continue training on a regular basis, you will be advised to buy your own kit. You can buy full kit from us (gloves, shin guards, boots, headguard) at very competitive rates.

All our coaches are fully insured and qualified and have had many years of experience teaching boxing, martial arts and gymnastics.

We look forward to seeing you in class and hope that we have a successful future together!
